Sonia Vega’s Story

Patient Testimonies | June 9, 2025

Hi, my name is Sonia Vega and I am a patient advocate living in Phoenix, Arizona. I am a mother to two boys and am living with diabetes.

To treat my diabetes, my doctor recommended the prescription drug called Ozempic to help lower my blood sugar down to healthier levels. The problem, however, is that Ozempic costs more than $1,000 a month. My health insurance doesn’t cover the medication and it’s simply too expensive for my income.

Sometimes the clinic I attend and am a patient at will give me samples of the drug, as they have done before, while in other instances my family has pooled money together to help me buy it. And sometimes I’ve even wanted to cross the border into Mexico to buy the prescription at a significantly lower and economic price tag due to my financial situation.

But why is the situation like this in the United States?

Supposedly the best country in the world, I am working to be able to afford my health insurance and the cost of my prescription drugs that are just too expensive. It shouldn’t be this way.
