My name is Cheryl Jones from Del City, Oklahoma. I am a patient who was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 1996.
Since my diagnosis, I have been taking the medication called Armour Thyroid which costs over $100 per bottle. This drug is not the only medication I take but rather one of many, and my insurance situation means I experience high prescription drug costs. The insurance company will not reimburse the pharmacy the full amount of the medication’s cost, leaving me responsible for picking up the slack.
For those of us on limited incomes and living off of Social Security benefits, such high costs hurt us badly. We are supposed to be living in our golden years, not dealing with fear and anxiety of where our next meal will come from. It ultimately comes down to the decision of buying prescription drugs or food to eat.
We should all have access to affordable prescription drugs in this country. Instead, the pharmaceutical companies keep raising their drug costs while insurance companies refuse to pay for varying degrees of a medication’s cost.
Congress must act now and lower prescription drug prices.
